Mike said that when he first began to struggle with stomach pain, he assumed it was due to the intense farm work he had been doing in ‘blistering heat.’

But after a loss of appetite and pain in his back, he decided to see the doctor, where he was told he’d sought medical attention ‘just in time.’

Mike shared his diagnosis in an Instagram post as he marked a year since being told he had gastric adenocarcinoma., posting a snap from when he was admitted to hospital.

‘This picture was taken as I was being transferred to the oncology section of UCLA Santa Monica from nearby Ronald Reagan hospital,’ he said underneath a photo of the back of a man wearing a Critical Care UCLA Transport t-shirt, and standing at the foot of a hospital bed.

WHAT IS STOMACH CANCER?

Stomach cancer, or gastric cancer, is a relatively uncommon type of cancer that affects about 6,600 people each year in the UK.

The initial symptoms of stomach cancer are vague and easy to mistake for other less serious conditions

They include: heartburn or indigestion that doesn’t go away, burping a lot, having no appetite and feeling full after eating only a small amount.

Other possible symptoms can be pain in the upper tummy area, losing weight, being sick, difficulty swallowing, blood in the stools, feeling tired and sometimes breathless due to anaemia.

As the early symptoms are similar to many conditions, stomach cancer is often advanced by the time it’s diagnosed

‘This gentleman, Latin brotha, saw how weak I was. He looked back at me before leaving my room and said ‘I’ve seen people make it out of the craziest situations, be strong brotha, you got this.’ I’ll never forget his face….’ he added.

Then, the Southern California farmer noted, ‘They said 18 months. It’s been exactly 12. Here we go.. Scared as F¥#% … The story will continue.. Love you @kelis.’

In Wednesday’s post Mike said his journey has been ’emotional’ but the ‘love and words of encouragement’ are ‘making [him] stronger.’

Mike finished his message with ‘the story will continue,’ a phrase he’s made regular use of as he documents his cancer battle.

The photographer had previously explained why he’s decided to be more open about his life on social media.

‘I want to be able to help those that might be experiencing something like this- a life altering disease full of questions and doubt- maybe, hopefully. By showing that it’s possible to make it through,’ he relayed in an earlier post.
