We don’t like writing it anymore than you like hearing it: COVID-19 is rampaging through America again, especially in states with high concentrations of unvaccinated people. If you don’t believe it, just look at the children’s ICUs in some Florida hospitals, or see the latest CDC forecasts, which predict a total of 630,000 to 662,000 Covid-19 deaths will be reported by Sept. 4. Concerned about the rise in cases, hospitalizations and deaths, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief medical advisor to the President and the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, spoke with Tampa Bay 10. Read on for 5 pieces of his essential advice—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You Have “Long” COVID and May Not Even Know It.
“You’re dealing with a very formidable virus, one that transmits very readily from person to person, and you don’t want to get people infected and you don’t want to get people hospitalized,” said Dr. Fauci. “And the best way to counter that is by getting vaccinated, vaccinating as many people as you possibly can. And in situations in which people aren’t vaccinated, particularly in indoor settings, they should be wearing masks. Masks are a good way to protect yourself if you are not vaccinated. And even if you aren’t vaccinated, they can offer an increased level of protection.”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has banned schools from mandating masks. “I’m not going to get involved with Governor DeSantis except to say that it is public health,” said Fauci when asked what he’d say to DeSantis if he were sitting across the table from him. The mandate doesn’t make sense when you’re trying to do everything you can to protect children to do something that would interfere with the protection of the children. So, and no matter where you are, whether you’re in Florida or any other place from a public health standpoint, that’s not an appropriate thing to do. You should do everything you can to protect the health of everyone, including, and particularly the children.”
Dr. Fauci expected full approval of the vaccines soon. “When you get full approval, you’re going to see those people who actually in good faith are saying, I really want to wait until it’s fully approved. Even though we have overwhelming data already. And I’ve had for some time as to the safety and the efficacy of these vaccines, but there will be some people who understand the blue will say, I want to wait when you get full approval. I think those people would step forward and get vaccinated. But what you will also see is that you will see empowerment of people at the local level to feel much more comfortable in mandating in a private situation. Be it a university, be it a college, be it a place of business to say, if you want to participate in the enterprise here, you’ve got to get vaccinated. I think you’re going to see a lot more of that.”
“I think anything that we can do to protect the health of the children and getting teachers vaccinated will clearly be a part of not the only thing, but a part of the safety of the children. I would feel very comfortable with mandating teachers to get vaccinated,” he said.
Follow Fauci’s fundamentals and help end this pandemic, no matter where you live—get vaccinated ASAP; if you live in an area with low vaccination rates, wear an N95 face mask, don’t travel, social distance, avoid large crowds, don’t go indoors with people you’re not sheltering with (especially in bars), practice good hand hygiene, and to protect your life and the lives of others, don’t visit any of these 35 Places You’re Most Likely to Catch COVID.
