A not-so-quiet day before things get loud on Friday: What happened at Browns training camp July 29 – cleveland.com

BEREA, Ohio — Things are about to get loud on Friday at Browns training camp. Fans will be in attendance for the first of 12 open practices at the team’s facility. There will also be a practice at FirstEnergy Stadium on Aug. 8.

Just because there weren’t fans on Thursday doesn’t mean it was quiet. Plenty happened at CrossCountry Mortgage Campus. Here’s what you need to know:

Beckham didn’t practice on Thursday, but it shouldn’t dampen the excitement over seeing what Beckham can look like with Mayfield in Year 3 together.

The first season, as Mary Kay Cabot wrote, was a mess under Freddie Kitchens. Their second season together ended when Beckham tore his ACL in the Browns’ win over Cincinnati.

“Year 1 we were definitely just trying to get used to each other,” Mayfield said. “Last year, [we] didn’t have a full season by any means because of the injury. And this year, I think we’ve had our backs up against the wall the two of us together, and I think we can relate a lot on those types of things.”

The Browns’ fourth-year quarterback said on Thursday, “I can play a whole lot better than last year. I know that.”

Mayfield, in his second year in Kevin Stefanski’s office, is ready to take on even more of a leadership role this season in helping teach and coach people up in the offense.

The news came from John Johnson III when he spoke to the media on Thursday.

“Anthony Walker has been awesome,” Johnson said. “He’s the signal caller for us and he’s going to be a big part of this defense.”

Walker is the middle linebacker and he was brought in to man the role vacated by B.J. Goodson who left in free agency.

“Anthony as a Mike linebacker, you have heard us say he gets everybody lined up, and you have to be vocal and you have to know what you are talking about,” head coach Kevin Stefanski said. “You have to be both loud and demonstrative in how you do it, but you better know what you are saying, as well.”

The Browns center and NFLPA president called the NFL’s idea to implement wristbands indicating who is and isn’t vaccinated “nonsensical.”

Tretter said he saw the move as a way for the NFL to shame unvaccinated players. Stefanski said the Browns chose as an organization to not implement wristbands.

“As you know,” Stefanski said, “we’re not dividing the team over this issue.”

Beckham and Higgins didn’t practice on Thursday, but they made their way out of the facility to watch the second half of practice. Higgins rolled his ankle on Wednesday, but Stefanski said he should be fine. Beckham is working back from his torn ACL.

Meanwhile, cornerback Troy Hill and rookie safety Richard LeCounte III missed practice with an illness.

Wide receiver JoJo Natson, who tore his ACL last year, offensive lineman Chris Hubbard and Grant Delpit worked on the bikes on Thursday.

We got a look at the kickers on Thursday and … well, it wasn’t great, especially for the incumbent, Cody Parkey, who connected on just one of his five attempts while Chase McLaughlin connected on all five.
